Above All, Iran takes its name from the rallying cry Jânam fadâ-ye Irân (My life for Iran). Rather than a call to sacrifice, it's a statement of priority: the country and its people come first.
The phrase was first popularized as "Neither Gaza, nor Lebanon, my life for Iran" — a clear message that Iranians' own freedom and well-being should come before any foreign agenda. During the Woman, Life, Freedom movement, the meaning grew. New refrains like "From Kurdistan to Tehran, my life for Iran" spread from city to city — Zahedan, Shush, Kurdistan — each one turning a local struggle into a shared national cause, expressing solidarity with other regions and showing unity as one nation. At the same time, other regions raised their own voices in solidarity, like Azerbaijan's own chant of support for Kurdistan. Together, they answered a simple truth: every fight across Iran is an Iranian fight — Iran, above all.
